Dental Sealants

Cavities often hide in the tiny grooves of children’s back teeth. Toothbrushes do their best, but some spots are simply hard to reach. That is where dental sealants come in.

At Chatham Pediatric Dentistry in Chapel Hill, we use sealants as a simple, kid-friendly way to help protect your child’s molars. Dr. Alex and Dr.Kevin place sealants in a calm, pressure-free setting so your child can get extra cavity protection without stress. No lectures, no guilt, just realistic support for real-life brushing habits.

We are proud to serve families from Chapel Hill, Carrboro, Durham, Pittsboro and Chatham County.

Why Dental Sealants Matter for Your Child

Sealants are thin, protective coatings that go on the chewing surfaces of your child’s back teeth. They help keep food and bacteria out of those deep grooves that are hard for small hands and toothbrushes to clean well.

In kid terms, sealants are like putting a raincoat on the parts of the tooth that get the messiest. In parent terms, they are one more way to support your child’s oral health between visits.

Some reasons families choose dental sealants for their kids:

Dr. Alex and Dr. Kevin will walk you through whether sealants make sense for your child’s age, cavity history, and daily routine, and they will always talk through options so you can decide what feels right for your family.

What to Expect When Your Child Gets Sealants

Getting sealants is usually easy for kids and does not require numbing or injections. First, we clean and dry the teeth that will get the sealants. Then we prepare the tooth surface, paint on the sealant material, and use a special light to help it harden. The whole process is typically quick, and your child can return to normal activities right away.

Throughout the visit, we explain what we are doing in age-appropriate, kid-friendly language, check in with you and your child, and keep things as relaxed as possible. If your child is anxious, sensitive, or just having a tough day, we slow down, adjust, and make a plan together instead of pushing through.

Why Families Choose Chatham Pediatric Dentistry

Chatham Pediatric Dentistry focuses only on kids, from babies through teens. Dr. Alex and Dr. Kevin both completed pediatric dental residencies after training at the UNC School of Dentistry, and they built this practice to feel warm, welcoming, and child-centered, not like the cold, clinical offices many parents remember.

Our space is playful and low-pressure, with an environment that helps kids feel engaged and comfortable instead of feeling like they are just sitting in a medical chair. We work with many different personalities, attention spans, and comfort levels, and we welcome children with complex medical histories or special health care needs.

When we recommend dental sealants or any other treatment, it is always a conversation. We explain what we see, what the options are, and what the research supports, then we help you choose what fits your child, your values, and your life.

Dental Sealants FAQ

How Long Do Dental Sealants Last on Kids’ Teeth?

Sealants can stay on the teeth for several years, especially on permanent molars. We check them at each regular visit and can repair or reapply them if needed. Some wear over time is expected.

We’ll use a special tool to help the teeth get dry.  They’ll feel us cleaning the teeth and rinsing them, and they’ll feel the touch of the sealant being placed on the teeth.  We then shine a flashlight to harden them, then we’ll adjust them if needed.

No. Sealants are a helpful add-on, not a replacement. Your child still needs daily brushing with fluoride toothpaste, flossing, and regular checkups. Sealants simply help protect the back teeth in spots that are hardest to clean.

Sealants have been used for many years in pediatric dentistry.  Good evidence suggests they are a safe and effective way to help protect teeth from cavities. If you have questions about materials or how they work, Dr. Alex and Dr. Kevin are happy to talk through the details with you.

We typically recommend sealants for the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, especially permanent molars once they come in. In some cases, we may also suggest sealants on baby molars if a child is at higher risk for cavities. We will always point out exactly which teeth we are talking about.

Your child can eat and drink normally after the visit. Chewing on things like ice cubes and biting into hard candy may cause sealants to chip.  We’d ask you to not do these things anyway, since they can also break your teeth.
